Delivered in partnership with Metro Tasmania, the MAIB Nightrider service operates across Burnie, Launceston and Hobart and is designed to reduce the risk of serious injury and death on the state’s roads by giving people a practical alternative to driving, particularly after social events and celebrations.
MAIB's Chief Executive Officer Paul Kingston said the Nightrider service reflected the organisation’s long-standing commitment to road safety and harm prevention.
“Preventing death and serious injury on our roads is a critical priority for the MAIB,” Mr Kingston said.
“Services like MAIB Nightrider provide a safe, affordable and accessible way for people to get home, without needing to get behind the wheel.”
By encouraging people to plan ahead and make responsible transport choices, the service plays an important role in reducing drink-driving, fatigue-related crashes and other high-risk behaviours associated with late-night travel.
Mr Kingston said choosing public transport over driving not only protects individuals, but also their families, friends and the broader community.
“It’s about making it easier for people to do the right thing,” he said.
“Leaving the car at home and using public transport helps keep everyone on the road safer.”
With half-price fares available across Metro services, the MAIB Nightrider initiative also removes cost as a barrier, making safe travel an easy and attractive option for more people.
